Non Gameplay Aspects of Testing
Playing Games or Breaking Games?
It has been said that you have to be able to play games for hours at a time in order to become a Xbox 360 game tester or a tester for another gaming console. This statement is still very much true, but there other aspects of the video game testing world that might not be considered playing games. If you are working at home, independently as a xbox game tester you will not have to deal with these aspects. But if you choose to work in a gaming studio you will be required to test the games and hardware in many different ways. Modern games are multi million dollar projects that require tedious work from every angle of the industry. Video games act in more complex ways with a variance of conditions within the system of how the game works. Games have different degrees of complexity like: Co-op, Online, Online infrastructure, servers, physics systems, dynamic AI, Vast open areas, hardware peripherals and so on. Each of these game aspects need to be fully tested to a point that may seem tedious or even absurd.
If you are a frequenter of gaming technology including the Xbox 360 system then this is probably not that big of a shock. "yes, games needed to be fully tested on every aspect of their structure, what else is new."
Game Testing Work and Tasks
Obviously becoming a xbox 360 video game tester isn't the work that should be done by just any gamer. You have to find this interesting and find yourself easily engaged in the way video games are made. Lets dive further into what kind of tedious work goes into testing non-gameplay mechanics. If the game has any type of online, the game has to be logged on to with many different kinds of internet connections. They would record the time it takes to get onto each server. A tester might look for repetitious dialogue, where a character is queued to repeat the same dialogue too many times. A xbox tester will have to check the timings of each load screen to ensure an efficient play sequence.
The examples can go on and on. What really matters is the ability to carry out these seemingly meaningless tasks with ease.
